Weekend Links
Happy weekend! I’m calling this one my weekend links as it is once again Saturday before I have the chance to sit down and share my collections from the week. The weeks are just so full. I have many articles this week. And some very beautiful and heavy songs. Let’s dive in.
THINGS I BOOKMARKED
‘The Little Mermaid’ Made Me a Musical Hypocrite – A bit nerdy, but fun read about musicals and the brilliance of The Little Mermaid.
Why do the British Say Sorry So Much – I originally clicked on this article for a laugh, but it turned out to be quite an interesting cultural read.
Can A Man Feel Like He’s a Woman? – Likely a polarizing read, but I very much appreciated the research, tone and thought here.
Paper Cuttings Made by 17th-Century Schoolgirls Discovered Beneath Floorboards – Absolutely fascinating discovery that I have immediately added to my list of places and exhibits to visit. (Hopefully quickly before this one closes!) What a cool find.
THE DARING INTERVIEW Gabrielle Blair on asking questions, solving problems, and containing multitudes – I have long followed and admired Gabrielle Blair for a myriad of reasons. This interview was super fun to read.
Why Adults Should Read Children’s Books – Katherine Rundell does it again. I just adore her writing, the way she thinks about literature and her passion for children’s literature too. “Children’s fiction does something else too: it offers to help us refind things we may not even know we have lost. Adult life is full of forgetting; I have forgotten most of the people I have ever met; I’ve forgotten most of the books I’ve read, even the ones that changed me forever; I’ve forgotten most of my epiphanies. And I’ve forgotten, at various times in my life, how to read: how to lay aside scepticism and fashion and trust myself to a book. At the risk of sounding like a mad optimist: children’s fiction can reteach you how to read with an open heart.”
THINGS I LISTENED TO
Anyone Can Whistle - So thrilled to come across this song this week. A delightful sneak peek into musician’s just hanging out. And now I have tracked down the album this song is originally from too. Look forward to listening to that soon.
Sara Groves “Dealbreaker” - Interview with Sara Groves on The Deepest Cut this week. I really love Groves’ music and greatly enjoyed this interview about one of the hardest songs she has written. The song is at the end of the interview, or just listen to it here. The interview was helpful context. But the song itself hit me very hard as I still process and grieve a lost relationship of my own. Music is medicine sometimes.
“Overthink It Baby” by Fielder – The newest single by Fielder, released just yesterday! I’ve listened to it twice this morning already. So excited by this project by Skye Peterson and Addison Agen. Skye continues to be a favorite music artist and songwriter for me. I just love the emotions and thoughts she connects to in her lyrics. I relate to this song a bit too much.
THINGS I FOUND
Blooms. The cacti are growing, the magnolia tree is in full bloom, and the myriad of colors are returning to the gardens.
Wordless Book. Attempted to make a quick stop in a bookstore on Market Day. Walked out with a few, including this black and white wordless book. I’m a long-time fan of John Goodall’s work and this one is super fun. I hope to share it on the book blog this week.
ABC book. Another of the books I found this week. An ABC book reprint from 1895. I am smitten with this and studying it for a project that it brought to mind. Will share it on the book blog soon too.
Happy reading and listening and hopefully you are enjoying spring weather too. It’s gorgeous here and I hope to squeeze in a walk amidst all the classes and prep and packing that is occurring at my house this weekend. 💚
